The African Council on Foreign Relations (ACFR) is a pan-African membership think-tank social enterprise that performs independent research, advocacy, studies, training, and consultancy on social, international, political, foreign policy, business, and economic issues. ACFR strives to create a platform to bring business, government, private sector, and social sector actors together to share perspectives, develop constructive ideas and opportunities, and promote Africa’s interest on the global stage.

About the Senior Fellowship Program
The ACFR Distinguished Fellowship program explores the big and complex question of how the African Council on Foreign Relations can help position the African continent in the 21st-century global economy, political, and financial governance systems.
Program History
The African Council on Foreign Relations Distinguished Fellowship Designation was designed in 2023 to celebrate and promote the extraordinary contribution of African and world leaders in the field relevant to the work of the Council. The ACFR Distinguished Fellows explore the big and complex question of how the African Council on Foreign Relations can help position the African continent in the 21st-century global economy, political, and financial governance systems. The program offers a very rich opportunity for development, excellent contributions, and profound conversations.
To become an ACFR Distinguished Fellow, leaders must meet rigorous criteria and have significant contributions to the field of leadership, education, economic development, and innovation. These fellows are awarded the designation based on their extraordinary work, long-proven innovative solutions, and noted leadership. They are known for exceptional service (private, public, nonprofit sector), long-sustained integrity, and advocacy for Africa’s future in the global political and economic governance systems.
Distinguished Fellows are appointed for two years by the President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the African Council on Foreign Relations.
Professional Expectations:
- Act annually in some significant manner to support the organization’s mission (e.g., expert advice, door opening, funding, or fundraising)
- Fellows are expected to produce at least 6 publications per year. This can produce reports, and participate in priority and special projects.
- Fellows will serve as development advisors and experts at the Global Africa Center and Diplomatic School at the African Council on Foreign Relations.
- Work alongside leadership to advance the organization’s mission in their cities, countries, and communities in Africa and USA.
- Attend board meetings (if you can) and events such as forums, summits, annual meetings, and special gatherings.
- Write at least 6 articles per year for publication on the ACFR’s website.
Moral Integrity Expectations:
- Respect and uphold the ACFR code of professional conduct and ethical principles.

How to Become an ACFR Distinguished Fellow
Nb: Distinguished Fellows are appointed for two years by the President and Chairman of the African Council on Foreign Relations.
The factors upon which a nominee would be rated are:
- Leader: A consistent pattern of leadership in one or more ACFR sectors.
- Mentor: A pattern of support to peers, colleagues, and young people entering the profession as a mentor, counselor, or “sage.”
- Innovator: A history of developing and implementing innovative programs and sharing and disseminating these through writing, participation in summit, forum, and conference sessions, or direct assistance through a one-on-one peer development program.
- Expert: Development of a special area of expertise that has been exhibited and recognized, both within the international community and by peers.
- Thought Leader: A demonstrated commitment to thought leadership to advance the state of the competitiveness and the state of the development practice as evidenced but not limited to writing, participation in forums, summits, conference sessions, contributions to research, and/or task forces and committees.
